Arranging flowers from your backyard
I still sometimes wrestle with the notion that a bouquet or arrangement of flowers needs to be big. The voice attempting to legitimize this in my head range anywhere from it will be more significant, more beautiful, more liked, a sign that my garden is more abundant, and the whopper, that I’m a freakin amazing gardener. . . Like my garden is the proverbial Babylon, an oasis in the desert overflowing and dripping with blooms. Can you tell that I’m still working on unwinding the grip that ‘all or nothing’ thinking has had on me? Well I’m happy to say that it is and it’s not.
In reality I know none of this is inherently true. Because even the most intimate still lifes or vignettes I create, I find gorgeous, just as moving, and frankly just as sensuous and satisfying to create. Deep down in my creative wellspring I know all of it’s beautiful. And I enjoy leaning in close to observe the delicate, almost miniature nature of things.
Just last week I spotted a praying mantis on my writing desk that would have fit comfortably on the nail of my pinky finger. It was small! If I wasn’t paying attention I’d have missed it.
So as I wait patiently until the larger focal flowers bloom in my garden I play with other ingredients. The delicate or dying stems, the few flowers that are just beginning to open. Even if it’s only a few I’ll arrange to my heart's content and take a dose of my own advice. Chill. Enjoy the life that surrounds me. Ditch comparison. Remember beauty resides in participation. Embrace the reality of playful paradox. And pay attention to the small stuff.
